With more and more netbooks popping out, external hard disks are becoming popular. Plug in a 300 gb hard disk and voila! Your 20GB eeePC suddenly has the power of its larger cousins.
But there’s a problem. Â External hard drives while handy and useful, suffer from some problems:
1) They consume extra power and drain your batteries
2) They power down into automatic sleep mode when not accessed. That slows response time.
To mitigate thep owerdrain, my only recommendation is to buy external batteries. (That’d make it a tad heavier… but hey, more juice is always good.
And as for the second problem? Check out nosleephd.codeplex.com . This little bit of code prevents that from happening by writing an empty text file to the drive every few minutes. Your external won’t shut down anymore.
