Vista A Memory Hog

Sunday 25 February 2007 @ 5:54 am

I’ve been a diehard XP user since 2003 and found that the OS isn’t so demanding. With just 512MB of RAM, you can pretty much do most Office work- such as internet, spreadsheets and the occasional audio manipulation and Photoshop retouches.

But comes Vista with its beefy processor and memory requirements.

So you might be wondering: wht are the ideal RAM levels that endows good performance?

Vista certainly requires more memory than XP did to achieve similar levels of performance. That is to be expected with the kitchen sink and garage thrown into the OS. Continue Reading »

Inno3D Geforce 8800 Review

Inno3D Geforce

Drool at these specs boys:

Product Inno3D Geforce 8800 320 mb
Chipset Geforce 8800 GTS
Memory 320MB GDDR3
Core Frequency 570MHz
Shader Clock 1200MHz

I just popped it into my Core2Duo system and ran off some of the latest games with nary a stutter. Halo performed beautifully as did Joint Task Force; the latter of which really slammed my old Geforce 7100GS to the ground.

But this… this unit shows commendably amazing frame rates after deep testing with SiSoftware Sandra. Even at resolutions above 1200+!!

Apacer Handy Steno AH320 Review

Saturday 17 February 2007 @ 4:09 am

Apacer AH320

I’m a fan of flash drives that write in a flash. This pretty much left me griping about some high priced units that failed to meet the Windows Vista Readyboost requirement.

Here’s my tale of woe.

Last week I spent hundreds of dollars on the following crap-ups:

Transcend 110 4GB with SLC
Transcend 120 2GB with SLC
PQI U339 4GB
PQI U190
and so on…

I truly thought that with their badge of “Ultra Speed” on the box, as well as jargon like
“SLC flash”, I’d get speedy transfer rates.

What I got was a disappointment. Continue Reading »

ReadyBoost Review

Sunday 11 February 2007 @ 12:09 am

Windows Vista is that new darling of every IT guy and his mom. Now, among Vista’s new whistles is that highly buzzed “Ready Boost technology”

Here’s my take on it.

ReadyBoost:What it Is

Instead of shelling out for extra RAM, can give your WinVista machine akick by using a USB flash drive. A Vista feature called ReadyBoost lets your processor use free memory on a USB flash drive to augment RAM. You’ll want, at a minimum, a drive that has 256MB of free space and can read data at 2.5 megabits per second and write data at 1.5 mbps. Now for stellar performance, the drive must have 500MB of space and read/write speeds of 5 mbps/3 mbps.
