I’ve been a shutterbug for a few years now and currently own a Sony A350 with the 18-250mm lens. Yesterday, this clerk at a Hongkong ariport noticed my camera and offered me a wide conversion lense which magically broadens the view of any shot. According to him, it allows me to shot even wider angle pictures. Sounds useful when I can not stand further back due to the location. He demonstrated with this horribly expensive lens in the shop that did appear to broaden the view.
“It’d look like you have an 11-220mm lens” he said. That whet my appetite and I plunked $100 for it.

Later I took additional shots of the city expecting panoramic magic.

Damn. When used for broadscapes, the additional view is not all that exciting. This certainly didn’t make my 18-200mm lens behave like 11-200mm. The additional view was marginal- and the edges were fuzzy.

Hence my quick review on Sony Wide Conversion Lens (VCL-DH0774):

The unit, made of steel is useful for a number of situations. It’s great when you want to shoot a table ful of people and can’t get too far back. But for cityscapes, there’s no added benefit. It’s also rather heavy. Once you install it, the centre of mass is shifted to the lens section. You need more wrist muscles to use this one.

I love to travel and meet new people. I also enjoy immersing myself in new cultures in strange lands. Little can fire up my passions as much as exploring can- particularly if I’m armed with the best possible digital cameras. After all- it’s with the camera that I capture superb memories for all eternity!

The last PC magazine I read stated that at least 10 to 40 new camera models hit the street every day. Brands from Canon to those as obscure as Hywaei parade in showroom windows with banners screaming “New!”, “10.1 Megapixels!” , “Hypershot Technology!”. How do you sift through the buzzwords and marketing hype? It’s easy with online reviewers like yours truly, or a dedicated digtal camera review site.

Check out the latter, for instance, and you’ll find not just side by side comparisons of leading models, but also the naked opinions of people who actually purchased the gadgets. This easily saves you from buying a lemon. Now you can venture out there confident that your next shot will be perfect.

Now if you’re wondering what camera I use? It’s the Canon 1D. Costs nearly two grand but darned perfect in every way.

Hmm… at that price, I’d rather go for an SLR at $500!

Here’s a delicious candy bar you can sink your eyes into! The Vivitar ViviCam 7399 hit shores in adazzling shade of neon orange, making it a darned lot easier to find in a slothful pile compared to those dull silver-shelled digital cameras. The features are cool fare include :-

7.2 Megapixel CCD sensor

Internal 3x optical zoom

4x digital zoom

2.5″ LCD display

MP3 playback and 4 pre-loaded games

Hmmm… Mp3 playback. And games too. I wonder why these low priced cameras tend to have features that the high $500+ don’t even have! Maybe one day, Sony will release an EOS900D with integrated Tekken 5?
