I like to travel light but there are days that my luggage clocks in at more than 10kg. Suitcases
with wheels help, but there are some places that simply don’t lend themselves to wheels. Think Greece where you have rolling terrain and houses separated by meters and meters of stairs! Your wheels would go bust in no time (and make a horrendous racket!). To meet this challenge, some inventors have designed a carrier that features rubber belt tracks along the length of the bag. This allows the full length of the bag to be wheeled along even on unforgiving steps.

A Suitcase That Walks Itself
In the PC and laptop arena , Microsoft doesn’t give a rats ass to Linux or the Mac OS. They, after all, hold the lionshare of the operating system landscape. But now the new threat to Windows monopoly comes in the form of ‘netbooks’ – lightweight, low-cost lappies that typically sport Intel’s blazing fast, energy miser Atom processor. Netbooks run happily on low RAM and with weak graphics processors. Continue Reading »

I can imagine using NLP or speed seduction to get a date with a hot babe. But Economics? Is
that possible?
Tyler Cowen, author of Discover Your Inner Economist apparently thinks so. Inspired by Freakonomics-inspired pop-economics books Cowen aims enlighten readers with economic principles that help you get everything done from the dishes to being laid.I personally loved his chatty disquisitions and the way economics often recedes into near invisibility. It’s one uplifting guide on how to get more of the really cool stuff in life. With the wit uncanny to a professor of economics, Cowen offers cutting strategies for appreciating museum pieces, for building family rapport and harmony, for writing a personal ad, for reading classic tomes that seem boring on first glance, for surviving Chinese torture, for properly indulging in self-deception and for most effectively giving to beggars in Sudan. In the book’s most passionate and practical chapter, on food, Cowen explains how, with planning and tactics, we can eat much better meals at home and in restaurants, here and abroad. It’s a dieter’s bonanza! Continue Reading »

Read on!
Starting this season people running Truphone’s free application for the iPod touch launch phone calls to ANY mobile or landline in the world, using Wi-Fi hotspots and the internet.
Usage is simple. When in a Wi-Fi hotspot, Truphone tweaks an iPod touch to act in the same way as a conventional phone. The great thing is that Wi-Fi hotspots are commonplace in offices, schools, campuses, at home, and even across entire town and even gas stations!

Got relatives abroad? I do. Many of my kin live in Singapore. Giving them a ring sure bites my budget! I was
glad, therefore when Global mobile network operator Truphone today added Truphone Anywhere functionality to its iPhone™ application. It’s one cool app that enables users to enjoy international calls across the internet for as little as £0.03/$0.06 [UK/Rest of World] per minute even when without wifi. Inbound Truphone calling on the iPhone is also provided for the first time, making it possible to enjoy completely free Truphone calls between two iPhones. Now that’s bringing IT to the masses!
Truphone Anywhere operates in 33 countries around the world, saving iPhone users from those nations money on pricy international calls made from their home country when not in Wi-Fi. The easy-to-use service works alongside domestic service providers, but reduces international call costs to as little as £0.03/$0.06 [UK/RoW] per minute.
Contrast those with, say, calling card solutions, Truphone Anywhere doesn’t require a user to remember circuitous steps. Whenever an international number is dialled from outside Wi-Fi, Truphone Anywhere simply asks whether he/she wants to make a Truphone call. The user merely accepts, and Truphone connects the call. Then it’s chat all night! Continue Reading »

Software Giant and virtual OS monopoly Microsoft rolls our a new variant dubbed Windows Vista PRODUCT
(RED) edition on Dell computers from December 15th onwards. The software contains no performance nor security upgrades but it costs a whopping $70 more than the flagship Ultimate version (at $219). So what benefit is there to forking over the dough? Easy. Every PRODUCT (RED) purchases funnels a a donation made to a charitable fund. The upgrade therefore goes to your karma- if you believe in it.
Apart from coming in an blood red package, this Windows Vista edition features a slew of new wallpapers, a screensaver, a handful; of sidebar gadgets and a Dreamscene. Amazon carries Vista RED, but it won’t be long till others start offering this pricy monster as well.
Hmmm… I can already imagine the pirates and hackers cranking out their own version of Vista Silver, Gold and Platinum. It’d come with free Adobe Photoshop, Autocad 2008 and maybe even a zip archive of windows 3.11 to Windows XP. <grin>
Some folks like yours truly demand instant access to their programs. There’s cooll new software to help with that. ViStart.
ViStart rapidly cuts the time taken to search for programs by indexing your application shortcuts. Simply type part of the application’s name and ViStart will “instantly” find it. No fuss, no muss.
The software doesn’t have that many frills and that’s what makes it great. It’s all about speed!
- It doesnt have a right-click context menu!
- It doesnt allow customization, such as what shortcuts are listed in the most used list (that eventually crowds things up!)
A few improvements and this baby will shine. Two annoyances it does have is it refuses to list contents under C:\ and that it starts blank the first time activated. Maybe the programmers should import a list of frequently used files, such as those in the Programs list.
For those wanting to give it a whirl, simply click on any of these links: Continue Reading »
