Microsoft went overboard in its desire to prevent unauthorized user access by implementing the User Account Control (UAC).
Protection is simple: for almost every file access operation, the system pops up a dialogue requesting affirmation. This is indeed effective protection. Viruses and other malware can’t do their nasty without your approval.
But there’s a number of major downers.
